Speedify LIVE Office Hours: Q&A with the Developers

July 27, 2022 @ 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm EDT

Tips to Maximize the Performance of Speedify

On the 108th episode of Speedify LIVE we hold our weekly Office Hours, but with a twist! Our regular host is out on a much-deserved vacation so our developers are taking over the studio.

Brian and Mike take viewer questions, discuss how you can maximize Speedify’s performance on a Raspberry Pi, and answer why we don’t have widgets, among many other things.

Here are our 5 takeaways from our Office Hours:

  1. While Speedify is not available for regular router setups, you can cover your entire household by sharing Speedify from just one central device, like a Raspberry Pi! A Pi is always a good choice, as it’s a small Linux device that you can set up to bond your connections and share it via Wi-Fi or Ethernet
  2. To maximize performance with Speedify on a Raspberry Pi, we recommend getting a Pi 4. This version of the Pi has its USB improved, as well as better CPU and just generally a whole lot faster, so it can provide you with much better performance with Speedify as well.
  3. When it comes to improving performance with Speedify, changing Transport Modes may just do the trick! Speedify is set to Auto by default, trying to detect which mode works best for your connections, but you can manually switch between UDP, TCP, Multi TCP and HTTPS if you want to optimize your connection even more.
  4. Speedify doesn’t have any widgets at this time, and there is a good reason! We use an extension for the VPN, and iOS in particular, doesn’t like extensions, so all the widget capabilities aren’t able to talk directly to VPN extensions, preventing us from providing you with accurate, real-time information. Apple’s new Live Activities feature may improve on this, however.
  5. The Overflow Threshold is something that works under the hood in the Speedify app, but you can see if you use the CLI. This is how we shuffle data between different priorities of connections, managing when anything other than the Primary connection is used. If you’re using the CLI, you can dial the threshold up or down, depending on your specific scenario.
I think Speedify and its channel bonding stuff has been useful to people doing a lot of really crazy, high speed things that sound exciting.
