Speedify LIVE: The Speedify iPhone IRL Streaming Setup

On the 57th episode of Speedify Live we revisit our studio and IRL streaming setups to review what’s changed, what we’ve learned, and what could be better.

We focus on our IRL streaming setup, show off all the gear we use to make it work, and even demonstrate how Speedify can save your streams!

Here are our 5 takeaways from our second take at our IRL streaming setup tour:

1. Our studio setup has pretty much stayed the same: a Mac Mini, an iPhone 12 Pro as our camera, running Camo, which turns the phone into a webcam while we also tether the iPhone’s cellular connection to the Mac, combining it in Speedify with an Ethernet, and another cellular hotspot. We’ve also added some soundproofing panels and led lights to the walls. 
2. Our IRL stream setup hasn’t changed much either: an iPhone 12 Pro used as the camera, running Speedify, combining its own cellular with the Wi-Fi Hotspot of a Google Pixel 4A. The iPhone is stabilized on a DJI Osmo 3 gimbal, hooked up with the Rode Wireless Go 2 microphone set. The stream itself goes through Larix Broadcaster, as well as Restream Studio via RTMP link to all the livestreaming platforms. 
3. Speedify differs from other bonding solutions in that Speedify has a sense of cost awareness. This means that by default, it sets more expensive connections, like cellular as Secondary, but you can also manually change Priority settings for any of your connections and control how much they can be used. 
4. The Speedify app has three active graphs of statistics available when connected to a server: Usage shows the total amount of data on each internet connection, in real time; Latency shows how much time it takes to get a packet to the Internet and back; and Loss shows the percentage of lost packets, which should normally remain zero.
5. As anyone who does livestreams, we just experienced a kind of Streamergency of our own! It looks like our team has done too much testing with our iPhone and didn’t fully charge it before the actual stream, so even though we turned our screen brightness down, we still ran out of battery, which led to a little downtime on our livestream.
