Improving Speedify for Live Streaming
On the 76th episode of Speedify LIVE we hold another Office Hours with Speedify lead developer, Mike Kane.
As usual, we take on viewer question, we talk about how the Speedify LIVE studio keeps evolving, how the usage charts in Speedify work, and discuss multiple features of the app.
Here are our 5 takeaways from our Office Hours:
- Speedify LIVE has a new producer, and some new toys to play with! We have now added follow and subscriber alerts; on this episode we use Ecamm on a Mac mini, with multiple cameras set up, Speedify combining an Ethernet and two Cellular connections; sending the stream to Melon app where the call is held and the graphics are set up in.Â
- The Speedify Usage Charts use Mbps measurements, showing the megabits per second being sent right now. The Usage chart shows each connection’s speed in use, so when your connections are actually being combined, you would see an overlay that connects all of the chart data.Â
- Speedify is different from other bonding solutions in that Speedify bonds internet, and not just video. Most other bonding services stream video over multiple connections as just video, with some packets going over one connection, some on the other, making it not generic at all. On the other hand, Speedify is more generic, sending internet packets over each connection, allowing all your internet traffic and all your apps to go through Speedify.Â
- When running a Livestream Test in Speedify we’re not testing with the full speed of your connection. We’re testing with an upload of 50 Mbps in small packets, trying to see if you could upload in 4k, 1080p, 720p or 480p. Running this test before going live will help you set the correct settings for your stream.Â
- The channel bonding process affects latency in multiple ways: typically having to go through the VPN servers can mean an extra 10ms of latency, but at the same time, the bonding also gives a huge amount of protections for when things go wrong and your latency would shoot up if not for Speedify bonding your connections.
