Speedify LIVE: How You Can Teach Yoga over Zoom

The 42nd episode of Speedify Live is a spiritual one, as we’re joined by Farah Kapoor, professional yoga instructor, who’s now teaching through Zoom to make sure people are getting their much needed mental, spiritual and physical exercise even in the time of the pandemic.

Farah shares with us the basics of yoga, how she ended up teaching through Zoom, and even does a bit of an exercise with us on stream.

Here are our 5 takeaways from our talk with Farah Kapoor:

  1. Yoga is the connection and union of body, mind and spirit. It involves proper stretching, breathing techniques, meditation, all about centering the mind and the spirit. It can help with both physical and spiritual ailments, if done correctly!
  2. Farah tells us that it’s important to start slow. Start with breath-work and stretches, learn to hold your poses, and don’t do anything extreme right off the start, especially if you have any injuries. You can still do yoga, just start simple and work with your teacher to find what works for you.
  3. When she decided to continue classes in the virtual space, Farah chose Zoom because she needed something simple that didn’t require much learning, something that felt like she was inviting people into her home.
  4. Proper alignment is an essential part of yoga, so it is important to give specific, but easy to follow cues when teaching. Farah makes sure to keep her classes simple in a way that she can also watch people, and make sure nobody gets hurt.
  5. As a non tech-savvy person, Farah has had her fair share of Streamergencies when she first started Zoom yoga classes. Once, when she had a full house at home, with everyone using the internet at the same time, she was also trying to hold a yoga class, but her connection died, the call disappeared and she spent 10 minutes logging back in. She also had to try and get back into that zen place she lost.

If you’re also holding or attending classes online, and want to avoid Streamergencies, bonding your connections in Speedify can help you out!

More than anything else, yoga is a curative and restoring practice. It does so much more than a stretch; it really invigorates you.
