Can I Use Starlink on an Oil Rig? Speedify Keeps Offshore Platforms Online When Starlink Drops Out

Speedify Makes Starlink Internet More Reliable on Oil Rigs and Offshore Platforms

Yes – offshore oil rigs and production platforms can run on Starlink internet, which brings far lower latency and higher speeds than the old geostationary satellite services. Offshore, where downtime affects safety systems and reporting, one connection isn’t enough.

Speedify is an app that combines several connections at once – multiple Starlink terminals, or Starlink plus cellular or backup satellite – so if one degrades the platform stays online automatically, with faster uploads and downloads across the combined links.

Speedify keeps you online when Starlink drops — on the water, on the road, off-grid.

Whether you’re on a boat, an RV, or a remote job site, Speedify bonds your Starlink with cellular or a second dish and automatically reroutes traffic the moment one link degrades — no dropped calls, no interrupted streams.

How Starlink Changes Internet Access on Oil Rigs

Offshore oil rigs and floating production platforms have historically used geostationary VSAT satellite services for internet connectivity. These services deliver adequate throughput for basic communications but suffer from high latency typically between 500 and 700 milliseconds, making real-time video calls, cloud application access, and remote operations difficult. They are also expensive, often running to thousands of dollars per month for limited data allowances.

Starlink Maritime changes this for offshore operations. Its low-Earth-orbit satellites deliver latency typically between 20 and 60 milliseconds and download speeds between 40 and 220 Mbps. This is fast enough for real-time video collaboration, remote equipment monitoring, crew welfare internet access, and operational data transfer that would have been impractical on VSAT.

The limitation is that Starlink, like any satellite service, is susceptible to severe weather and occasional coverage gaps. For offshore operations where internet downtime can affect safety monitoring systems, regulatory reporting, and crew communications, a single connection is not acceptable. Speedify bonds multiple Starlink terminals or combines Starlink with a secondary satellite or cellular source to eliminate that single point of failure.

How Speedify Manages Multiple Internet Connections on an Oil Rig

Speedify runs on a router or server in the platform’s network room and monitors all active internet connections simultaneously. When multiple connections are active, Speedify distributes traffic across all of them and delivers up to 95% of their combined upload and download capacity. When one connection degrades or drops, Speedify moves all traffic to the remaining connections at the packet level. Safety monitoring feeds, operational communications, and crew internet access continue uninterrupted.

Speedify also encrypts all internet traffic across every connection, protecting sensitive operational data, safety system communications, and crew information at sea.

How to Deploy Speedify with Starlink on an Oil Rig

Step 1: Install Starlink Maritime Terminals on the Platform

Mount one or more Starlink Maritime terminals on the platform with clear sky views. For maximum redundancy, install terminals on separate Starlink accounts and in different physical positions on the platform. Connect all terminals to the platform’s network infrastructure.

Step 2: Add Secondary Internet Connections

If available, add a 4G/5G cellular connection using a maritime cellular antenna for use when the platform is near shore. For deep-water operations, a second Starlink terminal on a separate account or a legacy VSAT service provides an independent backup path.

Step 3: Deploy Speedify on the Platform’s Network Router or Server

Download Speedify and install it on the platform’s network router or server. Speedify detects all active connections and begins bonding them immediately. All platform internet traffic now uses combined, automatically managed connectivity across every active path.

Speedify Also Monitors All Starlink Terminals on the Platform

Speedify displays real-time Starlink dish alerts for each connected terminal in the app dashboard. If any terminal detects a stuck actuator motor, a non-vertical mast, or a thermal throttle condition, Speedify surfaces the alert immediately. For platform communications teams managing multiple Starlink terminals, this provides hardware visibility across all terminals from a single dashboard.
