How Starlink Load Balancing Works and Where It Falls Short
Starlink load balancing, as implemented by enterprise routers from Peplink, Cisco Meraki, Ubiquiti, and similar vendors, distributes internet traffic across multiple WAN connections at the session or flow level. Each active session is assigned to a single internet connection. A video call goes through Starlink. A file download goes through 4G/5G cellular. A different video call goes through a second Starlink dish.
This approach has two fundamental limitations for businesses:
- No single-session internet upload and download speed improvement. Because each session is pinned to one internet connection, no individual application benefits from the combined bandwidth of multiple internet connections.
