How Starlink Load Balancing Works and Where It Falls Short
Starlink load balancing, as implemented by enterprise routers from Peplink, Cisco Meraki, Ubiquiti, and similar vendors, distributes internet traffic across multiple WAN connections at the session or flow level. Each active session is assigned to a single internet connection. A video call goes through Starlink. A file download goes through 4G/5G cellular. A different video call goes through a second Starlink dish.
This approach has two fundamental limitations for businesses:
- No single-session internet upload and download speed improvement. Because each session is pinned to one internet connection, no individual application benefits from the combined bandwidth of multiple internet connections. A 50 Mbps Starlink upload session stays capped at 50 Mbps regardless of how many additional internet connections are available.
- Session-level failover. When the internet connection carrying a session fails, that session resets. VoIP calls drop. Video conferences disconnect. VPN tunnels renegotiate. Users experience the failover as an interruption every time.
For businesses that need maximum upload and download speeds on individual high-bandwidth sessions, like live video uploads, large file transfers, remote desktop over high-latency connections, or cloud backup, session-level load balancing does not help those specific sessions.
How Speedify’s Channel Bonding Improves Your Starlink Internet
Speedify’s channel bonding technology operates at the packet level, not the session level. All internet traffic is routed through a single Speedify encrypted tunnel, and inside that tunnel, Speedify distributes individual data packets across all available internet connections: Starlink satellite, 4G/5G cellular, wired Ethernet, Wi-Fi, all based on real-time performance measurements taken every few milliseconds.
The result:
- Single sessions use all internet connections simultaneously. A video upload running over Speedify draws internet upload speed from Starlink, 4G/5G cellular, and Ethernet at the same time. Speedify can use up to 95% of the combined upload and download capacity of all bonded internet connections in optimal conditions.
- Failover is invisible to applications. When a connection drops, packets that were on that connection are immediately rerouted through the remaining connections. The session continues without a reset. VoIP calls don’t drop. Video conferences stay connected. VPN tunnels remain established.
- Dynamic rebalancing. Speedify continuously monitors internet performance indicators such as latency, packet loss, and jitter on each connection and adjusts packet distribution in real time. If Starlink internet latency spikes during satellite congestion, Speedify automatically routes more traffic through 4G/5G cellular or wired Ethernet until Starlink recovers.
Starlink Load Balancing vs. Speedify Channel Bonding: Key Differences
- Traffic distribution unit. Router load balancing works per session or flow. Speedify works per packet. Per-packet distribution means every session benefits from all available connections.
- Single-session throughput. Router load balancing caps each session at the speed of one internet connection. Speedify allows a single session to use the combined upload and download speeds of all bonded internet connections.
- Failover behavior. Router failover resets active sessions. Speedify failover is session-transparent: applications never see a disconnection.
- Configuration complexity. Enterprise router load balancing requires WAN interface configuration, routing policy setup, and often per-application or per-VLAN rules. Speedify detects available internet connections automatically and requires no manual routing configuration for basic operation.
- Deployment model. Router load balancing is hardware-specific. Speedify runs as software on Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, Android, and supported OpenWrt routers, deployable on existing hardware or purpose-built devices.
