Speedify Provides Starlink Failover for Your Business
Speedify gives your business automatic Starlink failover. When your Starlink satellite internet connection drops – due to weather, satellite congestion, dish obstruction, or hardware failure – Speedify instantly shifts your traffic to a backup internet connection with no interruption to active calls, file transfers, or cloud applications.
This article covers what Speedify does differently from router-based failover, and how to set it up across your team or your entire network.
Why Starlink Alone Is Not Enough for Business-Critical Internet
Starlink has transformed internet access for remote offices, field operations, construction sites, maritime vessels, and any business too far from fiber optic or wired broadband infrastructure. Internet download speeds between 100 and 220 Mbps with latency as low as 25 ms make Starlink a practical primary internet connection for most business workloads.
But Starlink does not offer a service level agreement for most business plans. And the nature of low-Earth-orbit satellite internet means outages happen:
- Starlink satellite handoffs cause brief micro-outages as the Starlink dish transitions between satellites. These last milliseconds to seconds, but they disrupt real-time applications like VoIP calls and video conferencing.
- Weather events like heavy rain, snow, or dense cloud cover can degrade or temporarily drop the Starlink internet signal strength.
- Starlink dish obstruction from trees, equipment, or mounting issues causes intermittent internet dropouts that are difficult to predict.
- Starlink satellite congestion during peak hours reduces available internet download and upload speeds across all users in an area, which can take priority away from your Starlink internet traffic even if you’re on a Starlink Business plan.
- Starlink hardware failures can make your entire office lose internet access until a replacement Starlink dish arrives.
- For businesses where internet downtime has a direct cost, like remote medical clinics, financial services, production facilities, offshore platforms, or any team running business-critical cloud applications, using a single Starlink dish for internet access is a single point of failure.
How Speedify’s Starlink Failover Works
Speedify’s channel bonding technology monitors all of your active internet connections simultaneously – Starlink and other satellite, 4G/5G cellular, Wi-Fi, and wired Ethernet – and distributes your internet traffic across them in real time based on their performance.
When Speedify detects that your Starlink connection is degrading or has dropped out, it automatically moves all internet traffic to your backup connections. This happens at the internet packet level, not the internet session level. That distinction matters:
- Router-level failover cuts and re-establishes the connection. Active VoIP calls drop. Video conferences disconnect. File transfers abort and must restart. Users notice.
- Speedify’s internet packet-level failover moves traffic mid-stream without resetting active sessions. A Zoom call stays connected. A file upload continues. A VPN tunnel doesn’t break. Users don’t notice.
Speedify achieves this by combining internet connections through its own encrypted tunnel. All packets from all internet connections: Starlink, 4G/5G cellular, Ethernet, travel through a single Speedify tunnel. When one underlying internet connection fails, the packets that were on that failing internet connection are instantly rerouted through the other active internet connections.
This is different from traditional internet failover. It’s also different from standard load balancing. Speedify actively monitors latency, packet loss, and jitter on each connection and adjusts routing decisions every few milliseconds.

Speedify Business Options for Starlink Failover
Speedify supports several Starlink failover configurations depending on your business setup and the backup internet connections you have available.
- Starlink plus 4G/5G cellular. This is the most common business configuration. Speedify bonds your Starlink satellite internet connection with one or more 4G/5G cellular connections. Starlink carries the primary load. If Starlink drops, 4G/5G cellular takes over instantly. If both are active and healthy, Speedify uses both simultaneously for faster upload and download speeds. This setup works on any device running the Speedify app or at the network level on a Speedify-compatible router.
- Two or more Starlink dishes. Running two Starlink dishes bonded with Speedify eliminates the single-dish failure risk entirely. If one dish loses signal, the second continues without interruption. Speedify spreads traffic across both dishes when both are working, giving your team closer to the combined upload and download speeds of both connections. This is the right configuration for remote offices and field operations where 4G/5G cellular coverage is absent or unreliable.
- Starlink as failover for fiber or wired broadband. For businesses that already have a primary fiber optic or wired broadband internet connection, Speedify can treat Starlink as a standby failover connection. Speedify keeps Starlink active and monitored but routes the majority of traffic through the primary wired internet connection. The moment the primary connection degrades or drops, Speedify shifts traffic to Starlink automatically.
- Starlink plus Ethernet plus 4G/5G cellular. For businesses that want the highest level of redundancy, Speedify can bond three or more connections simultaneously. Starlink, wired Ethernet broadband, and 4G/5G cellular all work together. This configuration is common in offshore platforms, emergency services deployments, and any operation where internet downtime has safety or financial consequences.
Speedify Failover vs. Router Failover for Starlink
Most enterprise routers, including Peplink, Cisco Meraki, and Ubiquiti, offer WAN failover. When the primary internet connection goes down, the router switches to the secondary. This is better than no failover at all, but it has a fundamental limitation: it operates at the internet session level.
When a router cuts from Starlink to a 4G/5G cellular backup, for example, every active internet session resets. VoIP calls drop and have to re-dial. Video conference sessions disconnect. Remote desktop sessions close. VPN tunnels renegotiate. Users on your network notice every switch.
Speedify operates below the internet session layer. Because Speedify bonds internet connections at the data packet level and routes all traffic through its own VPN tunnel, active internet sessions are unaffected by the underlying internet connection switching. The running applications never see internet disconnections.
For businesses where seamless internet connectivity is required – live broadcast, remote healthcare, financial trading, emergency response, or any team using persistent cloud sessions – this makes the difference between an internet failover event your team notices and one they don’t.
Speedify also gives more precise control over how each internet connection is used. Network admins on Speedify Teams plans can set internet connection priorities, data limits per connection, and rate limits. That means you can configure Starlink as your primary internet connection, a 4G/5G cellular connection as a rate-limited standby, and Ethernet as the highest-priority connection, all managed from the Speedify Teams dashboard without touching router firmware.
How to Set Up Speedify Starlink Failover for Your Business
Option 1: Install Speedify on Each Device
This is the fastest way to get Starlink failover working for individual team members.
- Connect your PC, Mac, Linux computer, iPhone or Android smartphone to your Starlink satellite internet connection via Wi-Fi or Ethernet.
- Connect your device to a second internet connection: a 4G/5G cellular hotspot, a second Wi-Fi network from a cellular router, or a wired broadband Ethernet connection.
- Install the Speedify app on your device. Speedify runs on Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, and Android.
- Speedify detects both internet connections automatically and begins combining them. No manual configuration is required to get basic internet failover working.
- For Speedify Teams plans, add the connected device to your Speedify Teams account. Use the Speedify Teams dashboard to set connection priorities and data limits for Starlink and your backup connections.
Option 2: Deploy Speedify on a Supported Router
For businesses that want every device on the network to have Starlink failover without installing software on individual devices, deploying Speedify on a compatible router is the right approach.
- Connect your Starlink dish and your backup internet connection – 4G/5G cellular, wired broadband Ethernet, or a second Starlink dish – to a Speedify-compatible router running OpenWrt firmware. The Miri X510 is a purpose-built bonding router powered by Speedify designed for this use case.
- Speedify bonds all connected internet connections at the router level. Every device on your business network automatically benefits from Starlink failover and channel bonding without any per-device configuration.
- Manage the deployment from the Speedify for Routers dashboard. Set connection priorities, monitor usage, and apply data limits across all bonded connections centrally.
This router-based approach scales to any number of devices and covers hardware that cannot run the Speedify app directly: IoT devices, smart displays, networked printers, and any other equipment on your business network.

Which Businesses Need Speedify Starlink Failover
- Remote offices and field operations. Any business operating in a location without reliable fiber optic or wired broadband internet depends on Starlink as its primary connection. Adding 4G/5G cellular or a second Starlink dish bonded with Speedify eliminates the single point of failure and keeps the team online through Starlink outages.
- Offshore platforms and maritime operations. Vessels and offshore platforms operating outside 4G/5G cellular coverage often combine Starlink with a secondary satellite connection or a backup VSAT system. Speedify bonds these internet connections and handles failover at the packet level so operations aren’t disrupted by Starlink signal loss.
- Emergency services and disaster response. First responders and disaster response teams deploying in areas without fixed infrastructure need internet connectivity that survives degraded conditions. Speedify’s ability to bond Starlink with 4G/5G cellular and Ethernet connections provides the redundancy these operations require.
- Remote healthcare and telemedicine. A dropped VoIP call or disconnected video session during a patient consultation is not a minor inconvenience. Speedify’s seamless Starlink failover keeps telehealth sessions running through satellite outages without requiring the session to restart.
- Live broadcast and event production. Video production teams streaming live content over Starlink can’t afford a dropped internet connection during a broadcast. Speedify bonds Starlink with 4G/5G cellular backups and manages the failover transparently so the stream continues.
- Any team using persistent cloud sessions. Businesses running cloud-hosted ERP systems, VoIP platforms, remote desktop sessions, or VPNs over Starlink benefit from Speedify’s session-preserving failover. A router-level failover event resets all of these. Speedify’s packet-level failover does not.
