How to Fix Wi-Fi Login Page Issues with Speedify VPN

Get Connected to a WiFi Hospot with Captive Portal While Being Protected by an Unbreakable VPN Connection

A WiFi login page, also known as captive portal, is something all of us come across in our everyday lives. Most of the time the WiFi login page pops up, you log onto the network and that’s it. However, sometimes the page just doesn’t show up. If you are having such issues we highly recommend taking a look at our cheat sheet here.

Some of you are more cautious about logging on to unknown networks – this article is for you! If you value your online privacy and don’t want to risk your personal information and sensitive data being stolen, you are using a VPN. Sadly, VPNs and WiFi login pages don’t play nice together because of the way they work. Whenever you have to login to the network, you have to disconnect from the VPN.

But this inconvenience that exposes you to online risks can now be eliminated if you use Speedify bonding VPN. Speedify delivers an unbreakable VPN connection by intelligently bonding multiple internet sources, ensuring continuous uptime and encrypted protection.

Quick answer

Should you have a backup 4G, 5G, Starlink, or cable internet connection?

Yes — every internet connection goes down, including Starlink, which drops for ~34 minutes a day on average. A backup connection from a different provider means one outage never takes you fully offline. The most common options are a 4G/5G cellular hotspot, a cable or DSL line, or a second satellite dish.

Speedify bonds any two connections into one — automatic failover, more speed, no dropped calls.

Speedify combines 5G, 4G, Wi-Fi, Ethernet, Starlink and other satellite into one secure and unbreakable VPN tunnel

Speedify is the only VPN app that seamlessly combines Wi-Fi, 4G / 5G cellular, Ethernet, Starlink and other satellite internet into one unbreakable internet connection. You get faster upload and download speeds while no one can spy on what you do online. Speedify allows you to unblock restricted content by connecting to one of the VPN servers distributed across 6 continents in 50+ cities.

Speedify will automatically detect any available Internet connections on your device, encrypting and intelligently distributing your online traffic between them for optimal performance. If you need help we have quick start guides available for most common set ups.

Speedify gets you faster uploads and downloads from the devices around you

Speedify's Pair & Share feature lets you and the devices around you pair up and share 4G/5G cellular both ways, so every paired device gets faster uploads, faster downloads, and a steadier internet connection. All sides share and use each other's cellular at once, unlike a personal hotspot, where one device gives and the rest take.

Speedify's Pair & Share feature runs over the local network between devices already running Speedify, with no extra hardware and no new data plans. Speedify creates an encrypted pool of shared 4G/5G cellular connections across all paired devices. Each device taps into that shared pool of combined connections for faster upload and download speeds and a more reliable internet connection.

Why the WiFi Login Page Doesn’t Work If You Connect to a VPN

The issue here is that once you connect to a VPN server, local redirects (such as the ones usually made by captive portals) are not allowed. So, the only solution is to disconnect the VPN and use the provided Internet as is. Very unsafe

Sometimes you’ll get lucky and you will be able to connect to the VPN after you log in. But in most situations, VPNs cannot be used on hotspots behind a WiFi login page.

What Happens in the Background when You Access a WiFI Login Page

It all comes down to the very basics of how a VPN works: creating an encrypted tunnel between you and the VPN server. Any traffic outside of that tunnel is not allowed.

Now, we all know how captive portals work: they usually redirect you to a webpage so you can log in or accept the terms and conditions of usage. The network setup has specific rules about IP address ranges that are acceptable to log in. These are assigned by the hotspot / router you’re connecting to, but since you are using a VPN to mask your IP address, the login page will see the VPN server’s IP address and not the one assigned by the hotspot/ router. Therefore, you won’t be able to connect to the WiFi network while keeping your VPN on.

Unless… you are using Speedify as your VPN.

How Speedify Bonding VPN Can Keep You Safe while Accessing WiFi Login Pages

When you join a WiFi hotspot with a login page Speedify will:

  1. Show you a notification asking you if you want to login.
  2. Keep you connected over cellular data – your other ongoing online activities (like Skype / Slack calls, streaming, gaming) will continue to work via the cellular connection, protected by Speedify so you don’t have to worry about dropped calls or streams.
  3. If you click the notification (or the message in the app) prompting you to connect to the WiFi hotspot, Speedify will pop up the login screen in a window.
  4. Once you login successfully, Speedify will immediately start using the WiFi connection.

Speedify is the only VPN app that can help you combine multiple internet connections (Wi-Fi, 4G, 5G, Ethernet, Starlink, Satellite and more) to improve the stability, speed and security of your online experiences. Moreover, Speedify handles captive portals better than any other VPN:

  • when it detects a captive portal, it automatically moves the traffic to and from the captive portal login page outside of the encrypted VPN tunnel
  • once you successfully log onto the network, Speedify moves that direct traffic back to the VPN tunnel
  • you can always use the split tunneling feature (Bypass) for specific services - this will put traffic to and from those outside of the bonded VPN tunnel.

Now you can finally connect to any hotspot and not worry about your data and privacy.
