What is a Hotel Captive Portal?
A Wi-Fi access portal, also known as captive portal, is a web page that the user of a public network has to view and interact with. Once you interact with the Wi-Fi access portal, you can access the Internet. Wi-Fi access portals are typically used by airports, hotels, coffee shops, and other venues that offer free Wi-Fi.
You’ve seen this. When you first log on to a network with a Wi-Fi access portal, there is a web page that requires certain actions before you can access the Internet. A simple Wi-Fi access portal forces you to at least look at a use policy page. And then click on a button showing agreement to the terms of the policy. Now, you may wonder why that is. Well, this can help the provider of the network avoid responsibility if it turns out you were up to no good while logged on.
You’ve surely seen other versions of Wi-Fi access portals. Some, for example, advertise the provider’s sponsors and you must click through them before accessing the Internet.
Other Wi-Fi access portals require you to enter an ID and password like the ones in hotels, for example. Doesn’t sound too complicated, right?
Quick answer
Should you have a backup 4G, 5G, Starlink, or cable internet connection?
Yes — every internet connection goes down, including Starlink, which drops for ~34 minutes a day on average. A backup connection from a different provider means one outage never takes you fully offline. The most common options are a 4G/5G cellular hotspot, a cable or DSL line, or a second satellite dish.
4G/5G cellular
Works anywhere. Just a SIM or hotspot — no installation needed.

Best for fixed locations. Different network, so outages rarely overlap.

Adds redundancy and throughput for remote sites or heavy usage.

Speedify Feature · Pair & Share
Speedify Pair & Share: share cellular between your devices, both ways
Most hotspots give. Speedify's Pair & Share gives and takes. Two devices running Speedify pair up and each uses the other's cellular connection simultaneously, so you both get faster uploads, faster downloads, and a steadier connection. No extra hardware, no new data plans, no setup beyond a tap.

Every device you pair with adds its cellular to yours, and yours to theirs.
Stays connected
If a paired device drops out, Speedify keeps you online on the remaining links.
Always private
Every shared connection runs through AES-256 encryption. Your traffic is yours.
No new gear

Common problems with a Hotel Captive Portal
Wi-Fi access portals solve many problems when it comes to convenience, but while solving some problems they do impose others.
The most common issue is when a Wi-Fi access page doesn’t show up. If you are having this issue, look at our guide on solving it here.
A bigger problem and one that people are becoming more aware of these days is online security and privacy. When you connect to a public network, your device is exchanging data, syncing your emails, social media accounts, and other profiles. But what if somebody intercepts that traffic and gets a hold of your credit card numbers, social media password, confidential emails and messages, and browsing history?
Privacy is a simple thing to achieve with a VPN. But if you’re already using one, you may have noticed that you can’t connect to a network behind a Wi-Fi access portal at all. Why is that? Let’s find out!
Solving issues with a Hotel Captive Portal
Fix Hotel Captive Portal issues with Speedify!
Here’s what you can do to troubleshoot any connectivity issues with your hotel WiFi:
- Check if you’re within WiFi coverage. This can be easily solved by using a WiFi Extender. Connectify Hotspot can help you with that!
- Check with your hotel receptionist for any issues with their hotel WiFi.
- If you are having issues displaying the hotel captive portal page, try to reload the login page or try rebooting your device.
- If you’re using a VPN while trying to connect to a hotel WiFi, use a smart VPN like Speedify.
Speedify’s captive portal assist feature helps you stay protected while logging in to Wi-Fi networks that use captive portals. If you have over one internet connection available, you can improve your internet speed and stability through channel bonding.
Speedify is the only VPN app that can help you combine multiple internet connections (Wi-Fi, 4G, 5G, Ethernet, Starlink, Satellite and more) to improve the stability, speed and security of your online experiences. Moreover, Speedify handles captive portals better than any other VPN:
- when it detects a captive portal, it automatically moves the traffic to and from the captive portal login page outside of the encrypted VPN tunnel
- once you successfully log onto the network, Speedify moves that direct traffic back to the VPN tunnel
- you can always use the split tunneling feature (Bypass) for specific services - this will put traffic to and from those outside of the bonded VPN tunnel.
You will finally be able to use your hotel WiFi hotspots without the associated hassles. The login page will always be displayed and even if your device connects to a bad Wi-Fi hotspot, you’ll still be able to access the Internet. Speedify bonding VPN provides advanced encryption tailored to your device. It also allows you to combine two or more Internet connections at once for their aggregated speed and stability.
Hotel WiFi login page bypass isn’t possible, you will need to go through the captive portal to access the Internet – Speedify is here to help with that and keep your data safe on public internet like hotel WiFi!
