On the 167th episode of Speedify LIVE we hold our weekly Office Hours with Speedify’s Lead Developer to talk about what the team’s been up to and some specific use-cases.
We take viewer questions, chat about all the Mac-related improvements we’re working on for the next Speedify release, and take a look at some mailbag questions to find answers to some very specific issues.
Here are our 5 takeaways from our Office Hours:
- Speedify needs servers in order to allow the use of multiple internet connections. We appear as a virtual network interface on your device, which all the packets you send out go through; they’re split up, sent out to the internet, but we need a central point where we put the packets back together that comes from a consistent IP address – which is why we have servers.
- When it comes to video and voice calls, the data threshold is actually quite low! You only need less than a megabit to do voice calls, but latency and loss need to be low in order to make voIP calls happen! The MOS or Mean Opinion Score is the standard rating based on how well your internet connection will perform voice calls.
- Mailbag Question No.1 brings up the question of getting multiple connections recognized by Speedify to improve your livestreaming. In this specific case, having multiple connections feeding into a switch, Speedify may not recognize all the connections as separate, so it’s better to just use USB ethernet adapters or tether over USB so the computer can recognize all connections and bond them.
- Mailbag Question No.2 brings up the issue of certain services misidentifying IP addresses. Services like Google tend to look at where people are coming from so when it sees a large number of people from the same country using the same IP, it may get confused and show the incorrect country instead of the location you’re connected to through the VPN.
- Mailbag Question No.3. brings up the issue of some connections simply not being enough for uploads and streams. This specific user combined Starlink with DSL but still experienced frame drops due to DSL often not being enough for uploads. This may be when you can add a third connection as a backup.
When you’re uploading video, if there’s a dip and the upload stops for five seconds, then goes back to working, it’s kind of “who cares”. But when you’re doing stuff like this [streaming], if I freeze up for five seconds, you’re gonna notice and the stream might even stop. So that’s why Speedify is really important.
