Two Starlinks, Starlink and Cellular, or Starlink as the Backup
Yes, one Starlink account can have two Starlink dishes: a Residential account can hold up to 8 Starlink kits and a Business account has no limit, each with a separate subscription. For staying online, though, a second dish shares the first dish’s weak spot: both Starlink dishes run on one Starlink network, so a Starlink-wide outage takes both down.
On the Speedify Starlink Index for 29 September to 12 October 2026, 71.8% of 5,994 Starlink users on Speedify ran a second internet connection alongside Starlink: 52.6% picked 4G/5G cellular, 36.2% cable or DSL and 11.1% corporate networks.
The short version: a second Starlink dish covers a blocked or broken dish but not a Starlink-wide outage. 4G/5G cellular or a wired line covers both cases.
This article compares a second Starlink dish with 4G/5G cellular and a wired line as a second internet connection, and shows how Speedify combines Starlink with whichever internet connection you pick. Speedify is an app that combines Starlink with other internet connections, such as 4G/5G cellular, and measures every internet connection Speedify carries; the Speedify Starlink Index publishes those measurements.
The live Speedify Starlink Index updates every day, so today’s Speedify Starlink Index figures will differ from the numbers in this article.
Which Internet Connections Starlink Users on Speedify Pair With Starlink
The shares at the top of this article count the 4,304 Starlink users on Speedify who ran another internet connection at the same time as Starlink. 4G/5G cellular means a phone, a hotspot or a cellular router; cable or DSL is usually a wired line the household kept; and corporate means a network the Speedify Starlink Index classifies as corporate, such as an office or business network.
The public Speedify Starlink Index figures don’t show how many users run two Starlink dishes.
When a Second Starlink Dish Keeps You Online
Two Starlink dishes in different spots see different patches of sky, so a tree that blocks one dish may not block the second dish. A second dish also covers a hardware fault, a damaged cable, or a dish that needs a reboot. Setups that need more capacity than one dish delivers combine two dishes for the extra throughput. Adding a second Starlink to one account and running multiple Starlink dishes cover the setup.
When a Second Starlink Dish Doesn’t Help: Starlink-Wide Outages, Weather and Congestion
Two Starlink dishes share one Starlink network backend. When the whole Starlink network went down for about two and a half hours on 24 July 2025, every Starlink dish went down at once. Heavy weather over the area and a congested Starlink cell hit both dishes the same way.
For that reason Speedify’s own guidance is to pair Starlink with a different kind of internet connection, such as 4G/5G cellular or DSL. A cell tower and a satellite fail for different reasons, at different times.
Starlink Standby Mode: A Low-Cost Backup for Messages, Not Video Calls
Starlink also sells Standby Mode, a pause option with unlimited data at up to 500 Kbps for a small monthly fee. 500 Kbps covers messages and email, but a 1080p Zoom call needs 3.8 Mbps up, so Standby Mode suits a spare dish kept for emergencies rather than a second internet connection for everyday use.
Starlink as the Backup to a Wired Internet Connection
The 36.2% of second internet connections on cable or DSL show that many Starlink users on Speedify kept a wired line when Starlink arrived. In some homes the wired line is the main internet connection and Starlink is the backup. Even a slow DSL line pairs well with Starlink: the two internet connections share no infrastructure except the house.
Starlink versus 5G home internet is a similar decision, and Speedify’s answer is to combine Starlink and 5G.
How Speedify Combines Starlink With a Second Internet Connection
Speedify combines every internet connection on the device into one combined internet connection and decides, packet by packet, which path carries each packet. When Starlink stops answering, Speedify moves the traffic to the other internet connection. In Redundant mode, Speedify sends the same packets over both paths, so a call never notices a dropout.
Speedify works best when the combined internet connections have similar bandwidth and latency. A much slower internet connection works better at Backup priority: Speedify then uses the slower internet connection only when Starlink drops. Speedify’s guide explains the setting. Speedify also runs on routers, so a router that runs Speedify combines Starlink with a second internet connection for a whole home or site.
What the Speedify Starlink Index Can’t Tell You About Backup Internet
How often both internet connections were down at once. That figure would show exactly what a second internet connection buys, and the Speedify Starlink Index doesn’t publish that figure yet.
What the average Starlink owner does. People who install Speedify are people who care about staying online, so the share running a second internet connection is almost certainly higher among Starlink users on Speedify than among all Starlink owners.
What counts as corporate. The corporate category is a classification of the network, not a survey of the users.
