How Starlink Works on a Boat
Starlink offers two main options for marine use. Starlink Maritime is designed for vessels at sea and supports use while the vessel is underway. Starlink’s portable residential service can also be used on boats in many regions, though it is not rated for high-speed ocean travel.
Starlink Maritime delivers download speeds typically between 40 and 220 Mbps at sea, depending on conditions. Latency is low compared to traditional geostationary satellite services, which makes it practical for video calls, live streaming, cloud applications, and VoIP.
The limitations on a boat are familiar: heavy weather degrades signal, and moving through zones of higher satellite traffic can cause temporary slowdowns. When you are near a coast or in a marina, 4G/5G cellular coverage can supplement or back up Starlink, giving Speedify a second path to bond.
How Speedify Improves Starlink Internet on Your Boat
Speedify runs on a device or router aboard your boat and monitors all active internet connections simultaneously. Speedify tracks latency, packet loss, and available bandwidth on each connection continuously.
When both Starlink and a secondary connection such as 4G/5G cellular are active, Speedify bonds both using Speedify’s channel bonding technology and delivers up to 95% of their combined upload and download capacity. When Starlink slows or drops, Speedify moves all traffic to the secondary connection at the packet level. Active calls and uploads continue without interruption. When Starlink recovers, Speedify rebalances traffic automatically.

How to Use Speedify with Starlink on Your Boat
Step 1: Set Up Your Starlink Maritime Internet Connection
Install your Starlink dish on a mount with a clear sky view and connect it to your boat’s power system. Use the Starlink app to verify signal and check for obstructions. Connect the Starlink router to your onboard network.
Step 2: Add a Secondary Internet Connection
In coastal waters or port, connect a 4G/5G cellular modem or antenna to your router or device. Confirm cellular signal is available at your current location. Even a partial cellular signal gives Speedify a second path to bond with Starlink for better combined throughput and failover protection.
Step 3: Download and Run Speedify
Download Speedify on your device or install it on your onboard router. Speedify will detect all active connections and begin bonding them immediately. No manual routing configuration is needed.

Speedify displays real-time Starlink dish alerts in the app dashboard.
