How Speedify Works for Nautical Internet
Speedify’s channel bonding technology runs on the vessel’s router or on individual crew devices and bonds all available internet connections simultaneously: Starlink Maritime, VSAT, 4G/5G cellular from one or more carriers, and any available Wi-Fi when in port or near a marina. Speedify monitors latency, packet loss, and available bandwidth on each connection in real time and distributes internet traffic accordingly.
For communications-critical operations, Speedify’s Redundant Mode sends each data packet simultaneously over all active connections. The first packet to arrive is used and duplicates are discarded. This keeps active VoIP calls, video conferences, and operational data sessions running even when one or more connections are heavily degraded by weather or coverage issues.

Nautical Internet Connection Setups with Speedify
- Starlink Maritime plus 4G/5G cellular. The most effective setup for most vessels. Speedify bonds Starlink Maritime as the primary internet connection with 4G/5G cellular from one or more carriers as backup and supplemental capacity near shore. When the vessel is within cellular range, Speedify uses both connections simultaneously for faster upload and download speeds. When the vessel moves beyond cellular range, Speedify routes all traffic through Starlink automatically.
- Two Starlink dishes. Vessels requiring maximum throughput or high redundancy on open water can run two Starlink Maritime dishes bonded with Speedify. Speedify uses both simultaneously for combined throughput when both are active. When one dish loses signal (due to obstruction, satellite handoff, or hardware failure), the other continues without interruption.
- Starlink plus VSAT. Vessels already equipped with a VSAT system can bond Starlink with VSAT using Speedify. The two satellite connections provide genuine redundancy: they use different satellite infrastructure, so a widespread Starlink outage does not take both connections down simultaneously. Speedify manages traffic distribution and failover between them automatically.
- In-port and marina internet bonding. When a vessel is in port or at a marina, marina Wi-Fi can be added to the bonded connection alongside Starlink and cellular. Speedify bonds all three and uses the combined throughput for crew internet access during layovers.
How to Deploy Speedify on a Vessel
Option 1: Speedify for Routers: vessel-wide coverage
- Connect your Starlink Maritime dish, VSAT modem, and any 4G/5G cellular adapters to a Miri X510 bonding router or a compatible OpenWrt router installed aboard the vessel.
- Install Speedify on the router via the Speedify install script and activate a Router License. Configure all internet connections as WAN interfaces.
- Set connection priorities: Starlink to Always, 4G/5G cellular to Always or Secondary depending on your data plan, VSAT to Secondary or Backup. Speedify manages failover and traffic distribution automatically.
