Always-On VPN: Use Speedify VPN for Faster Uploads and Downloads

Unbreakable VPN Connection for Captive Portals by Combining Starlink, Wi-Fi, 4G, 5G, and DSL with Speedify

If you’re a regular VPN user, you know that you’ll have issues when using any WiFi network that has a login page. Whether it’s in hotels, at airports or even public WiFis on the street, it’s not easy to use a VPN on captive portals.

The problem is that once you connect to the VPN server, local redirects (such as the ones usually made by captive portals) are not allowed. So, the only solution is to disconnect the VPN and use the provided Internet as is. Sometimes you’re lucky: you can connect to the VPN after you log in. But in most situations, VPN cannot be used on captive portal powered hotspots.

In this article we’ll show you how you can actually use a VPN without disconnecting on Internet connections that require login through captive portals.

Speedify delivers an unbreakable VPN connection by intelligently bonding multiple internet sources, ensuring continuous uptime and encrypted protection.

Why Speedify VPN is unbreakable vs. other VPNs

Most VPNs stop working the moment one of your internet connections has a problem. If your Wi-Fi glitches, or your device briefly switches between 4G / 5G and Starlink, you can suddenly lose your VPN connection.

Speedify is built to prevent that. Instead of relying on just one connection, Speedify can use all your available internet connections at the same time: Wi-Fi, Ethernet, 4G / 5G cellular, even Starlink or other satellite. If one connection slows down or drops, Speedify instantly moves your traffic to another internet source so your VPN stays connected and your online activity isn’t interrupted.

In this video, you’ll see how Speedify keeps your internet connection secure, smooth, and reliable by intelligently spreading your encrypted data across the available connections. The result: an unbreakable VPN tunnel.

Combining multiple internet sources like Wi-Fi, 4G, 5G, Starlink and wired broadband together makes Speedify VPN unbreakable

No matter how secure your VPN is, if you experience a drop in your Internet connection, either your VPN tunnel will break leaving you unprotected, or you’ll be stuck offline. Speedify is the only VPN that seamlessly combines all of your connections, including Wi-Fi, 4G, 5G, Ethernet, and Starlink, into one unbreakable connection to keep you online and secure.

Speedify will automatically detect any available Internet connections on your device, encrypting and intelligently distributing your online traffic between them for optimal performance. If you need help we have quick start guides available for most common set ups.

Combine personal hotspots for unbreakable and secure uploads and downloads

Speedify's Pair & Share feature enables you to connect to multiple personal hotspots at the same time and wirelessly share LTE, 4G, and 5G cellular connections back and forth between multiple Speedify users on the same local network to create a faster, more reliable connection for everyone.

With Speedify, all of your available internet sources - even shared personal hotspots - are combined inside the secure VPN tunnel with your encrypted traffic intelligently distributed between them, while split tunneling allows blocked sites to bypass. So, if any connection slows down or drops out, the VPN tunnel stays active and the other connections will automatically take over to keep you securely, seamlessly connected.

Why You Can’t Use Any VPN on Captive Portals

It all comes down to the very basics of how a VPN works: creating an encrypted tunnel between you and a server in the cloud. Any traffic outside of that tunnel is not allowed.

That said, we all know how captive portals work: they usually redirect you to a webpage so you can log in or accept the terms and conditions of usage. The network setup has specific rules about IP address ranges that are acceptable to log in. These are assigned by the hotspot / router you’re connecting to in the hotel, airport or other public WiFi.

As you are using the VPN to mask your IP address, the login page will see a completely different IP than the one it’s expecting. So, you won’t be able to connect to the Internet.

Using VPNs on Captive Portals

There are different types of captive portal setups. Some of them allow accessing them via specific ports from the Internet. In this case, if you know the port, then you can manually connect to the login page while running the VPN. See this Reddit thread about using VPN port 53 to bypass captive portals.

But most login pages have specific rules in place which don’t allow external connections – like the one from your VPN server. In this case, if you’re an advanced user, you can try some of the solutions suggested here. Also, check out this interesting thread on the OpenWRT forum.

Wouldn’t it be great if VPNs would automatically detect captive portals and separate only that specific request outside of the tunnel? Now you can do that with Speedify bonding VPN!

How Speedify Bonding VPN Works on Captive Portals

Unlike all the other VPN services available, Speedify can make the difference between a direct Internet connection and one that requires a login page. When you join a WiFi hotspot with a captive portal:

  1. Speedify will show you a notification asking you if you want to login.
  2. In the meantime, your other ongoing online activities (like Skype / Slack calls, streaming, gaming) will continue to work via the cellular connection, protected by Speedify
  3. If you click the notification (or the message in the app), Speedify will pop up the login screen in a window.
  4. After you login successfully, Speedify will immediately start using the WiFi connection.

Speedify is the only VPN app that can help you combine multiple internet connections (Wi-Fi, 4G, 5G, Ethernet, Starlink, Satellite and more) to improve the stability, speed and security of your online experiences. Moreover, Speedify handles captive portals better than any other VPN:

  • when it detects a captive portal, it automatically moves the traffic to and from the captive portal login page outside of the encrypted VPN tunnel
  • once you successfully log onto the network, Speedify moves that direct traffic back to the VPN tunnel
  • you can always use the split tunneling feature (Bypass) for specific services - this will put traffic to and from those outside of the bonded VPN tunnel.

Best of all – if you’re on one of those pesky WiFi connections that require you to login every hour or so, you’ll be protected by Speedify. Your gaming, streaming or any other activities won’t be interrupted, as Speedify’s failover protection will make sure to switch traffic to the other working connections.

As a VPN, Speedify has recently been ranked as the fastest service by Tom’s Guide. Are you still thinking which VPN to use? The answer is right here!
