Prioritize 5G, 4G, Wi-Fi, Satellite and Other Internet Sources Depending on Your Business' Needs
Speedify implements policy-based network interface management to control bandwidth allocation, cost optimization, and failover behavior across bonded connections. The system provides per-interface configuration of priority levels, usage quotas, and behavioral policies that align network resource consumption with organizational cost structures and operational requirements.
Speedify's Priority-Based Traffic Management
Speedify classifies each internet connection into one of four configurable priority tiers that govern traffic distribution algorithms:
Primary Connections
Primary internet interfaces are utilized for all traffic under normal operating conditions. Typically the most reliable and unlimited internet sources are set to Primary, such as fiber, cable, unlimited 4G or 5G, or satellite. Multiple interfaces configured as Primary share traffic load according to capacity and quality metrics.
Failover role: Remains active during all operational states.
Secondary Connections
Secondary network interfaces activate when aggregate demand exceeds Primary interface capacity. Typically used for more expensive or less reliable connections, such as 4G or 5G cellular, expensive satellite internet, or a secondary broadband source, as a supplement for the Primary connections. Acts as overflow capacity rather than constant participant.
Failover role: Automatically promoted to active status if Primary interfaces fail, regardless of current traffic load.
Cost optimization: Minimizes data consumption on expensive interfaces while maintaining them as available capacity. Particularly relevant for cellular connections with tiered pricing above quota thresholds.
Backup Connections
Backup internet connections remain inactive unless all Primary and Secondary interfaces become unavailable. Typically reserved for the most limited, expensive internet sources. Provides connection continuity during infrastructure failures.
Failover role: Last-resort connectivity. Automatically deactivates when higher-priority interfaces restore.
Cost control: Prevents inadvertent consumption of expensive backup capacity during normal operations.
Never to Be Used Connections
Never priority is for network interfaces detected by the system but explicitly excluded from all traffic routing. Functionally equivalent to disabling the interface for Speedify usage.
Management: Interface remains visible in configuration but excluded from operational display. Can be re-enabled by changing priority level.
Speedify Policy Enforcement Architecture
Speedify software monitors internet connections interface state and automatically adjusts traffic distribution based on:
Capacity saturation: When Primary interfaces exceed utilization threshold (typically 85-90%), Secondary interfaces activate to prevent congestion
Quota exhaustion: When an internet interface reaches configured quota, priority automatically demotes to Backup to prevent overage charges
Interface failure: When an internet interface loses connectivity, traffic immediately redistributes to remaining interfaces regardless of priority levels
Quality degradation: When an internet interface experiences elevated packet loss or latency beyond acceptable thresholds, traffic allocation reduces proportionally
Interface restoration: When a failed or degraded internet interface returns to acceptable operational state, traffic gradually reallocates according to priority configuration.

Real-Time Metrics
Per internet interface visibility into:
- Current upload/download rates (Mbps)
- Cumulative session bandwidth consumption
- Quota utilization percentage
- Connection quality indicators (latency, packet loss)
- Active priority level and transition events
analyze how to further optimize internet connectivity
Historical Analysis
Aggregated statistics enable capacity planning and cost optimization:
Usage patterns: Identify peak consumption periods, typical daily/weekly/monthly consumption
Cost attribution: Understand which connections contribute to total bandwidth costs and at what rates
Capacity adequacy: Determine whether Primary interface capacity is sufficient or if frequent Secondary activation indicates need for capacity upgrade
Failure frequency: Track how often Backup interfaces engage, indicating reliability issues with primary infrastructure
Performance Considerations for Speedify Connection Priorities
Minimal Overhead
Priority evaluation and quota tracking add negligible computational overhead (<1% CPU) and latency (unmeasurable at application layer). Implemented as efficient state machine with O(1) lookup time per packet.
Failover Speed
Priority-based failover occurs at subsecond timescales:
- Interface failure detection: 1-3 seconds (based on keepalive timeout)
- Traffic redistribution: Immediate (next packet routed to available interface)
- No application-layer reconnection required.
Quota Enforcement Latency
Quota exhaustion detection occurs in real-time (per-packet accounting). When quota threshold reached:
- Current packets in transmission complete normally
- Subsequent packets route to remaining interfaces
- Total time from quota exhaustion to priority change: <100ms.
