Internet on a Boat Near the Coast vs Offshore: Cellular or Satellite
Cellular coverage along most coastlines reaches farther out than people expect, often 10 to 20 miles depending on the terrain and where the carrier’s towers stand. Near shore, cellular is usually faster and cheaper per gigabyte than satellite. Satellite internet works anywhere the dish can see the sky, far offshore too, but it costs more and holds up less well in heavy weather or under overhangs. Marina Wi-Fi is free at the dock, but it’s shared and often slow.
Most boating happens in the zone in between: close enough to shore for cellular, far enough out that you need a plan for when a tower drops out of range.
Why Using Starlink and Cellular at Once Beats a Backup That Waits
A simple backup setup waits for one internet connection to die before it switches to the other. On the water, that means a dropped video call or a frozen update on your chart plotter (the boat’s navigation screen) right when the channel gets tight. As the boat moves and the cellular signal changes with the distance to the towers, Speedify keeps adjusting how much traffic goes over each internet connection, and favors whichever one has the shortest delay and the fewest drops at that moment.
Speedify uses as many internet connections as the boat has: a Starlink dish plus cellular modems from two different carriers all work together. Speedify works with any Starlink service that gives your router or device a normal internet connection, including Starlink Maritime, Starlink’s service for boats and ships. At the dock, marina Wi-Fi becomes one more internet connection for Speedify to use alongside Starlink and cellular.
How to Set Up Internet on a Boat for Liveaboards and Weekend Boaters
If you live aboard, a fixed setup works best: a marine router mounted below deck, the Starlink dish on a hard mount, and a cellular modem with an outside antenna, which picks up a stronger signal than a phone alone. Weekend boaters can use a lighter setup: a portable Starlink kit and a phone as a hotspot. Speedify uses whatever internet connections you plug in, without special hardware.
With both internet connections working together, chart plotter updates, weather downloads and video calls with family on shore share the combined speed instead of fighting over a single internet connection. Speedify itself is light software, so most of the power use comes from the Starlink dish and the cellular modem, the same as running them without Speedify.
- Check that your Starlink dish and a cellular modem or hotspot are both on board and powered on.
- Download Speedify onto the boat’s router, or onto a laptop that shares its internet with the other devices.
- Connect both internet connections. Speedify finds them and starts using them together automatically.
- At the dock, turn off cellular and check that Starlink alone keeps you online. Then turn Starlink off and check that cellular does.
What Speedify Can’t Do for Your Boat Internet Offshore
Speedify needs at least two working internet connections to help, and it can’t add speed that isn’t there.
