  • reaching a device on your home or office network from anywhere in the world, such as a media server at home or a NAS at work, through a port on the VPN server.
  • securing all internet traffic, so nobody on the same network can read the data you transfer from your NAS to your smartphone, especially when you connect from a public Wi-Fi hotspot.
  • if you use a VPN that combines internet connections, like Speedify, and the device has two or more connections, you also get faster, more reliable internet to and from that device.

VPN Port Forwarding Requirements

Port forwarding with Speedify has two requirements: a Dedicated Server added to a paid Speedify plan, and Speedify running on the device you need to reach (a web server, file server, media server or similar), connected through that Dedicated Server.

A second internet connection on that device is optional but helps: if streams from your home media server buffer or file transfers from your web server take too long, Speedify, a VPN that combines internet connections, can use its connection-combining technology to combine 2 or more connections on the server machine, such as Ethernet and 4G/5G cellular. The traffic stays protected with encryption.

How Port Forwarding Works on a Speedify Dedicated Server

With a Speedify Dedicated Server, you can run internet-accessible services on machines which connect to the internet through Speedify. As mentioned above, these include web servers, media servers, etc.

An incoming request from the internet goes to a port on the Speedify Dedicated Server, and the Dedicated Server sends it on to the right device over that device’s combined, encrypted Speedify connection.

Requests for forwarded ports when connecting to a public Speedify Speed Server are ignored.

How to Get a Dedicated Server and Set Up VPN Port Forwarding in Speedify

Here’s what you have to do to get a dedicated VPN server with Speedify, if you don’t already have a Speedify subscription:

  1. Go to the Speedify Store page on speedify.com.
  2. Select your desired subscription type.
  3. Finish the payment.
  4. Login to your Speedify account using the email you used in the purchase process.
  5. From the dashboard click on “Manage” under your subscription and then “Add a Dedicated Server”
  6. You will receive an email; reply with the location of the server you want.
  7. A member of the Speedify team will contact you to confirm the details of the dedicated server, such as its location and hosting provider.

If you already have a Speedify account, whether it’s an Individual one, a Families one or a Teams one, just follow the steps 4 to 7 above.

Then, to start using VPN port forwarding with Speedify:

  1. Download and install Speedify on your devices. Both the ones you’ll be connecting from and the ones you’ll access.
  2. Set up port forwarding on the “server” machines: in Speedify on that machine, click the ☰ menu at the top left and choose Port Forwarding under Session Settings.
  3. Add port forwarding rules. Click Add TCP Port or Add UDP Port, type a port number between 1024 and 49151 and press Enter. Speedify forwards up to 20 ports per device. Click Reconnect when Speedify asks: the rules take effect after the reconnect.
  4. Connect to the desired machine using VPN port forwarding. Use the specified ports and Speedify dedicated server public IP address.
