Speedify LIVE Office Hours: Q&A with the Developers

June 15, 2022 @ 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm EDT

Using Speedify on Raspberry Pi, WWDC news and CLI

On the 93rd episode of Speedify LIVE we hold our weekly Office Hours with Speedify lead developer, Mike Kane to discuss all things Apple, Pi and Speedify!

We chat about the recent Apple WWDC announcements, how they affect Speedify on Apple devices, and we answer viewer questions about Raspberry Pi’s and Wi-Fi sharing, among other things.

Here are our 5 takeaways from our Office Hours:

  1. Speedify LIVE now has a written streaming checklist! As we learn from every livestream, we have been noting down everything that needs to be checked before we go live: turning off the noisy AC, making sure the camera and microphone are set up correctly, checking if Speedify’s running, etc. Even the smallest thing needs to be double checked for a successful stream.
  2. Many new features were announced at the Apple WWDC but one that may play an important role with Speedify is Apple’s Live Activities: this feature shows updates on your phone’s lock screen, so this might allow people to see our streams or the connected server status right on their lock screen once it’s released.
  3. If you’re looking to bond connections in Speedify for livestreaming without using a PC or phone, we recommend using a Raspberry Pi! This is a budget-friendly Linux device that allows you to combine connections in Speedify, share the bonded connection via Ethernet or Wi-Fi, and it even allows you to run Speedify “headless”, without the UI, through the command line interface
  4. If you find the Speedify User Interface too small, you can size up the window with the press of a couple buttons! Currently only available on Windows, but you can size Speedify up by pressing Ctrl and the + sign at the same time.
  5. Most devices only have one built-in Wi-Fi adapter, which is why you can’t normally connect and share via Wi-Fi at the same time. In this case, you can get an additional USB Wi-Fi adapter, and use the built-in for connecting, and the USB one for sharing.
The user interface of Speedify on Linux is entirely optional. There's a Speedify package and Speedify UI package and you can just not install the Speedify UI package.
