Starlink for Remote Work: The Numbers Behind a Frozen Video Call
Starlink works for remote work: more than half of Starlink users on Speedify have a typical latency under 100 ms, and a 1080p Zoom call needs only 3.8 Mbps up. The weak spot is dropouts: on the Speedify Starlink Index for 29 September to 12 October 2026, Starlink users on Speedify were offline 46 minutes a day on average, 37 minutes on fixed dishes, and a few seconds of that in the middle of a call freezes the picture.
If you work remotely from a rural area, the choice is often between Starlink and whatever wired line reaches the house, and Starlink tends to win on speed: Starlink publishes a US peak-hour median close to 200 Mbps download.
The short version: speed and latency suit video calls, and dropouts are the weak point. A second internet connection covers the dropouts, and 71.8% of Starlink users on Speedify already run one.
This article covers what a video call needs, the latency and dropouts on the Speedify Starlink Index, and how to keep calls connected, including a second internet connection. Speedify is an app that combines Starlink with other internet connections, such as 4G/5G cellular, and measures every internet connection Speedify carries; the Speedify Starlink Index publishes those measurements.
The live Speedify Starlink Index updates every day, so today’s Speedify Starlink Index figures will differ from the numbers in this article.
Why Video Calls Freeze or Drop on Starlink
A video call needs far less speed than people expect: Zoom lists 3.8 Mbps up and 3.0 Mbps down for 1080p video. What a call needs is a steady internet connection. Zoom, Teams and Google Meet lower the video bitrate when the internet connection struggles and recover when the internet connection improves, but a gap of a few seconds freezes the picture, and a longer gap drops the call.
Any Starlink residential plan covers a 1080p call on speed: Starlink lists upload speeds of 15 to 35 Mbps on most plans, against the 3.8 Mbps Zoom needs.
Latency matters too. The ITU-T G.114 recommendation keeps one-way delay, mouth to ear, under 150 ms for natural conversation. The network round trip is only part of that delay, since the call app adds encoding and buffering on top. Past that limit, people start talking over each other.
Starlink Latency for Video Calls on the Speedify Starlink Index
Counting each of 4,758 Starlink users once, from 29 September to 12 October 2026:
- one user in four had a typical latency of 45 ms or less,
- half had 85 ms or less,
- three in four had 185 ms or less,
- and one in ten had more than 295 ms, 5 ms short of the 300 ms that Speedify’s support guide calls very noticeable.
Nine in ten Starlink users stay under 300 ms. For the one user in ten above 295 ms, the cause sits in the individual setup, and what normal Starlink ping looks like walks through the common causes.
Starlink Dropouts During a Workday, on the Speedify Starlink Index
46 minutes a day offline is a real cost for a full-time remote worker. Two facts soften the number. Fixed Starlink dishes, the kind a home office uses, averaged 37 minutes. And the trouble concentrates: two thirds of Starlink dishes dropped 0.1% of pings or fewer, while one dish in ten dropped more than 2.86%.
The Speedify Starlink Index can’t say how many of those minutes fall during working hours, or how many land in the middle of a call. A dish with a clear view of the sky sees fewer dropouts than the average; a dish under trees sees more.
How to Make Starlink Reliable for Remote Work
- Wire your work computer to the router. Wi-Fi inside the house adds freezes on top of Starlink’s.
- Clear the Starlink dish’s view of the sky before anything else, and check the obstruction map after a storm or a season of tree growth.
- Schedule big uploads, backups and updates outside meeting hours.
- Add a second internet connection, such as 4G/5G cellular, and run both through Speedify. When Starlink drops, Speedify moves the call to cellular, and in Redundant mode every packet travels over both internet connections.

What the Speedify Starlink Index Can’t Tell You About Remote Work
When the dropouts happen. The Speedify Starlink Index has no hour-by-hour breakdown, so working hours can’t be compared with evenings.
What a call felt like. The Speedify Starlink Index measures internet connection health, not call quality, and averages over measurement periods hide a two-second freeze.
Whether Starlink is right for one particular house. A Starlink dish’s own history in the Starlink app, after a week of use, answers that better than any average. The Speedify Starlink Index counts Speedify users, who install Speedify because calls have to hold.
