Testing Speedify on MacBook Air with Apple M1 Chip
The first step was to install Speedify (built at the time for Intel processors) from the Mac App Store. Speedify installed and ran without any changes. On the first speed test, Speedify hit the full 350 Mbps of the test Wi-Fi network, using 40% of one of the M1’s 8 cores.
To push the M1 processor harder, the test then compiled the Chromium web browser on the same Mac while running the speed test. Building Chromium is a stress test for any computer: it turns millions of lines of code into machine instructions.
But again, the M1 processor delivered: hitting 350 Mbps on a speed test while churning through building thousands of files of source code.
iOS App Compatibility on the M1 Mac: EdgeWise Connect Tested
Next came iOS app compatibility: the App Store installed EdgeWise Connect, a mobile-only VPN app from the team behind Speedify. EdgeWise Connect installed without problems, and once connected, the VPN showed up as a macOS VPN and encrypted the traffic from the native macOS apps on the computer.
At the time of this test, the next step was a native build for the M1 processor, even though the Intel build was already fast enough.
