Speedify Keeps You Online When Weather Slows Starlink by Combining It With 4G/5G Cellular, Wi-Fi, Ethernet
Weather affects Starlink. Heavy rain, snow, and dense cloud scatter the signal between the dish and the satellite, which lowers throughput and, in a hard storm, can drop the connection for a stretch. Light rain is usually fine. A downpour, a snow load on the dish, or a thunderstorm overhead is when speeds sag and the connection wobbles. You cannot fix the weather, but you can stop it from taking the household offline.
This guide covers how weather slows Starlink down, what you can do at the dish, and how Speedify keeps you online through a storm by combining Starlink with another internet connection, such as 4G/5G cellular, Wi-Fi, or wired Ethernet.
How Weather Slows a Starlink Connection
- Rain fade. Heavy rain absorbs and scatters the signal on the Ku and Ka bands Starlink uses, which lowers throughput until the cell clears.
- Snow and ice. Snow building up on the dish blocks the view of the sky, even though the dish has a built-in heater that handles light snow.
- Dense cloud and storms. Thick storm cloud overhead raises packet loss and adds retransmits that read as lag.
- Wind. Strong gusts can shift a poorly mounted dish out of alignment, which compounds the weather hit.
Use Speedify to stay online during satellite handoffs every 15 seconds
Starlink switches between satellites every 15 seconds on a fixed schedule. Research confirms Starlink performs handovers at the 12th, 27th, 42nd, and 57th second of every minute, synchronized globally. Each satellite handoff is a potential dropout, and on a congested network or with any obstruction, those Starlink dropouts become real interruptions.
Speedify fixes this by combining your Starlink internet connection with another satellite dish, Wi-Fi, 4G/5G cellular, or wired Ethernet at the same time. When Starlink drops, Speedify keeps your traffic moving on the backup internet connection instantly. Speedify runs on Windows, Mac, Linux, iOS, Android, and supported OpenWrt routers.

Speedify alerts you about your Starlink dish status
The Speedify software app alerts you about your Starlink dish status - i.e. when your actuator motor is stuck, the mast is not vertical or there's a thermal throttle. These Starlink dish alerts will appear on your Speedify software app dashboard and are triggered if the specific condition was met at least once in the previous 15 seconds. They will persist for as long as they are active.
Speedify's Starlink Control Center helps you monitor all your Starlink dishes, read obstruction maps, and align multiple dishes for better combined performance. Get a real-time view of each dish's health and optimize the position of each Starlink dish. Have the Starlink dishes cover different sections of the sky, rather than overlapping and wasting your internet bonding capacity.

What You Can Do at the Dish
Mount the dish solidly so wind cannot move it, and give it the clearest view of the sky you can so it is not fighting obstructions on top of the weather. Clear snow when it settles. These steps reduce how often weather drops the connection, but they do not change the fact that a single satellite link is exposed to whatever is happening in the sky above it right now.
Who Loses Most When Weather Hits Starlink
- Remote workers. A storm during a workday should not end the workday.
- Rural homes. Where Starlink is the only connection and bad weather is common.
- Streamers. Live broadcasts that a weather drop would cut off mid-stream.
- Anyone in a storm-prone region. Homes where heavy weather is a weekly event, not a rare one.
Speedify and Starlink: Ride Out the Storm on Two Connections
A storm hits one connection at a time. Speedify combines Starlink with 4G/5G cellular, Wi-Fi, or wired Ethernet into one bonded connection and splits traffic across all of them at the packet level. When rain fade or snow drops Starlink’s throughput, the cellular connection carries the load, so calls, streams, and work stay up. When the weather clears and Starlink recovers, Speedify shifts traffic back automatically. The household stays online through weather that would take a single dish offline.
