Speedify Helps You Get Faster Upload and Download Speeds from Starlink on a Mac
There’s no Starlink app for Mac or MacBook: Starlink makes its app for phones and tablets only. To use Starlink on a Mac, connect the Mac to the Starlink router’s Wi-Fi, or plug it in with an Ethernet cable.
For the fastest, steadiest speeds on your Mac, Speedify uses your Starlink internet connection together with a second internet connection, like 4G/5G cellular or another Wi-Fi network, so uploads and downloads stay fast and you stay online when Starlink briefly drops.
Speedify combines Starlink internet connections with no extra hardware needed
Starlink Internet Connection Dropouts Happen to Everyone
Speedify measures thousands of Starlink users in more than 150 countries. From 29 September to 12 October 2026, fixed Starlink dishes went offline for about 37 minutes a day on average, and Starlink dishes on RVs and boats for about 61 minutes a day.
Starlink also switches each dish to a new satellite every 15 seconds, and a switch can cause a short dropout. Even a perfectly installed Starlink dish goes offline, and about 7 in 10 Starlink users on Speedify use Starlink together with a second internet connection, like 4G/5G cellular.
Starlink App for Mac or MacBook: What You Can Check in a Web Browser
The Starlink app comes from the App Store or Google Play Store and runs on phones and tablets only. The same goes for Starlink on a Windows PC. On a Mac, you can still check your Starlink dish and account in a web browser:
- Your Starlink dish’s status: while the Mac is on your Starlink Wi-Fi, open Safari or another web browser and go to dishy.starlink.com or 192.168.100.1.
- Your Starlink account: log in at starlink.com to manage your plan and billing.
- Starlink router settings: the Starlink router has no settings page for computers. Change its settings in the Starlink app on your iPhone or Android phone.
How to Connect Starlink to a Mac
You connect a Mac to Starlink through the Starlink router’s Wi-Fi, or with an Ethernet cable and a USB-C to Ethernet adapter. The way you connect affects both speed and how steady the Starlink internet connection is.
Option 1: Connect Your Mac to the Starlink Router’s Wi-Fi
The Starlink router has a normal Wi-Fi network. Connect your Mac to it like any other Wi-Fi network: System Settings, then Wi-Fi. You don’t need drivers or other software. Wi-Fi is the quickest setup and works for most people.
What to know about Wi-Fi:
- The Wi-Fi signal gets weaker the farther your Mac is from the Starlink router. A Mac close to the Starlink router gets faster speeds than one at the edge of the Wi-Fi range.
- Wi-Fi adds a little delay compared with a cable, on top of Starlink’s own delay of 25 to 60 milliseconds on land.
- Walls, floors and appliances between your Mac and the Starlink router slow the Wi-Fi down, one of the common causes of slow Wi-Fi on a Mac.
Option 2: Connect Your Mac to the Starlink Router with an Ethernet Cable
The Starlink Gen 3 router has Ethernet ports built in. Older Starlink routers need the Starlink Ethernet Adapter to connect with a cable. Run an Ethernet cable from the Starlink router to your Mac, through a USB-C to Ethernet adapter if your Mac has no Ethernet port. MacBook Air and MacBook Pro models need one; Mac mini, Mac Studio and Mac Pro have Ethernet ports built in. Any USB-C to Ethernet adapter that works with macOS works with Starlink. macOS finds the cable connection on its own and uses it.
Why a cable is better:
- Less delay than Wi-Fi between your Mac and the Starlink router.
- Steadier speeds, because a cable isn’t affected by walls, other Wi-Fi networks or distance.
- Your Mac gets the full speed your Starlink internet connection delivers, with no Wi-Fi slowing it down.
Starlink Download and Upload Speeds on a Mac: What to Expect
Starlink speeds depend on your plan, your location and the time of day. Here are the speeds Starlink publishes for each plan in its Starlink specifications:
| Starlink Plan | Expected Download Speed | Expected Upload Speed |
|---|---|---|
| Residential Lite | 80 to 200 Mbps | 15 to 35 Mbps |
| Residential 100 Mbps | 80 to 100 Mbps | 15 to 35 Mbps |
| Roam (for travel, RVs and camping) | 65 to 260 Mbps | 15 to 35 Mbps |
| Local Priority and Global Priority | 135 to 310 Mbps | 20 to 44 Mbps |
For Starlink’s other Residential plans, check starlink.com for the speeds where you live. Upload speed is where most Mac users on Starlink feel the limit: video calls, live streaming, cloud backups and large email attachments all depend on it. On every plan, Starlink uploads are much slower than downloads, and they slow down further when the Starlink network is busy in the evening. For ways around that, see how to get faster Starlink uploads and downloads.
Why Starlink Speeds Go Up and Down on a Mac
Even when your Mac is connected to Starlink the right way, a few things make the speed jump around:
- Satellite switches: Starlink satellites move all the time, and your Starlink dish switches to a new one about every 15 seconds. Each switch can cause a short break. You won’t notice it while browsing, but it makes video calls and live streams stutter.
- Something blocking your Starlink dish: trees, buildings, roof edges, or snow and ice on the Starlink dish block the satellite signal. The Starlink app shows where the view is blocked, and even a small block causes dropped data and slowdowns.
- A busy Starlink network: Starlink users share the satellites overhead. In the evening, especially in busy areas, speeds drop as more people use Starlink at the same time.
- Only one internet connection: macOS sends everything over Starlink. If Starlink slows down or drops, your Mac has nothing to fall back on, and every app that needs the internet stops at once.
How Speedify Makes Starlink Faster and More Reliable on a Mac
Speedify uses your Starlink internet connection and a second internet connection at the same time. The second one can be a 4G/5G cellular hotspot, a second Wi-Fi network, a second Starlink dish, or a wired cable or DSL line. With Starlink alone, Speedify can’t add download and upload speed or keep you online through dropouts.
More Download and Upload Speed from Starlink and 4G/5G Cellular Together: with Starlink and a 4G/5G cellular hotspot both connected, your Mac can use the speed of both at once. For example, if Starlink gives you 120 Mbps download and 15 Mbps upload, and a 5G hotspot gives you 80 Mbps download and 20 Mbps upload, your Mac can get close to 190 Mbps download and 33 Mbps upload. These are example figures, not measurements.
No More Dropped Calls When Your Starlink Dish Switches Satellites: during each switch, Speedify moves your traffic to the 4G/5G cellular connection, so your video call, file transfer or stream keeps going.
Speedify Works Around a Busy Starlink Network: when Starlink slows down in the evening, Speedify moves more of your traffic to the 4G/5G cellular connection on its own, and goes back to using both fully when Starlink recovers. Read how Speedify’s technology does this.
Speedify Encrypts Your Internet Traffic: Speedify is also a VPN. It encrypts all your internet traffic across Starlink and your other internet connections, protecting passwords, banking and private messages.
How to Set Up Speedify with Starlink on a Mac
Setting up Speedify with Starlink and a second internet connection on a Mac takes a few minutes:
- Connect your Mac to Starlink by Wi-Fi or Ethernet cable, as described above.
- Add a second internet connection to your Mac: connect your iPhone with a USB cable and turn on Personal Hotspot, use the hotspot on an Android phone, or plug in a USB cellular modem. A USB cable gives faster, steadier cellular speeds than a Wi-Fi or Bluetooth hotspot. You can also plug a second Starlink dish into a USB-C to Ethernet adapter.
- Download and install Speedify on your Mac. Speedify runs on MacBook Air, MacBook Pro and desktop Macs, and is also available for Windows, iOS, Android, Linux and OpenWrt routers.
- Open Speedify and connect. Speedify finds your Starlink internet connection and your second internet connection, and starts using both. Each one shows up in Speedify with its live download speed, upload speed and delay.
- Optional: set a separate data limit for each internet connection, so usage on Starlink and on cellular is counted separately. Streaming Mode, which puts video calls and streams first, is already on by default.
Who Gets the Most from Speedify with Starlink on a Mac
People who work from home: in rural areas, Starlink is often the only fast internet you can get. Speedify with Starlink and a 4G/5G cellular hotspot keeps Zoom, Teams and Google Meet calls going, and keeps uploads fast for cloud apps, even when Starlink is busy or switching satellites.
Video creators and live streamers: upload speed decides your stream quality and how fast your files reach people. Adding 4G/5G cellular with Speedify adds its upload speed to Starlink’s. Speedify’s Streaming Mode also puts live video first, so your stream is less likely to buffer or drop frames when your Starlink dish switches satellites.
People on boats and in RVs: Starlink works where nothing else does. Speedify with a 4G/5G cellular hotspot keeps you online when Starlink loses the sky as you move, and Starlink covers you when there’s no cell signal.
Anyone uploading large files: architects, video editors, photographers and engineers send big files to clients and cloud storage. Adding a cellular connection to Starlink adds its upload speed, so files arrive sooner.
