- First, with the VPN service turned off, find out your public IP address. Your approximate location can be identified from that address alone.
- Next, run the Standard DNS leak test and note the DNS servers your browser is querying.
- Next, start the VPN service and connect to a VPN server in a different country, preferably on a different continent. Reload the testing page: it should display a different IP address, which means the VPN hides your IP address from the websites and services you use.
There is one more step to confirm your DNS requests are protected too. Go to step 4.
- Run the Standard test for DNS leaks again with your VPN on. The test lists the DNS servers your browser queries.
If the DNS IPs and hostnames differ from the ones you saw in step 2, without the VPN, your VPN protects you against DNS leaks.
