How Wi-Fi Assist Works
While you are connected to a Wi-Fi network, Wi-Fi Assist turns on when Wi-Fi performance gets poor and automatically switches you to cellular. As Apple states, because you stay connected over cellular when Wi-Fi is poor, you might use more cellular data.
Why Wi-Fi Assist Uses Too Much Data
Wi-Fi Assist looks only at which connection is faster at that moment. Wi-Fi Assist does not consider your data cap, how much data your current activity uses, or anything else, and you have little control over its settings.
As a result, you can use more cellular data than you need for the same internet experience. If the Wi-Fi network is heavily loaded, your phone could be on cellular the whole time you thought you were on Wi-Fi.
How to Disable Wi-Fi Assist on Your iPhone
You can turn off Wi-Fi Assist directly on your iPhone or iPad. Wi-Fi Assist is on by default. To turn it off:
- Go to Settings > Cellular, then scroll down to the Wi-Fi Assist switch.
- Tap the switch to turn off Wi-Fi Assist.
To turn Wi-Fi Assist back on later, tap the switch again.
