The most reliable internet for a construction site trailer is usually two internet connections used together: a Starlink dish plus 4G/5G cellular. Why Internet at Construction Sites and Job Trailers Keeps Failing
Job sites are much harder to keep online than a home or an office:
- No wired internet line. Most sites have no cable or fiber, so every internet connection is wireless from day one.
- Cellular signal that swings. Signal changes with terrain, weather, and how many crews are using the same cell tower.
- Things blocking the Starlink dish. Equipment, new structures and trees block part of the sky, and the Starlink dish switching satellites about every 15 seconds leaves short gaps.
- The trailer moves. As the build goes on, the spot with the best signal moves with it.
How Speedify Uses Starlink and Cellular Together for the Job Trailer
Speedify sends the trailer’s traffic over every internet connection at once and fills the gaps automatically.
- Starlink and 4G/5G cellular together. Starlink carries most of the load, 4G/5G cellular covers the moments something blocks the Starlink dish, and Speedify uses both at the same time when both are working, for close to their combined speed.
- Cameras, cloud apps and calls stay online. When one internet connection weakens, Speedify moves its traffic to the other right away, without dropping the call or restarting the upload.
- A second cellular carrier for dead spots. A second cellular modem on another carrier’s network covers the dead spots the first one can’t reach.
- Encrypted by default. Speedify encrypts the site’s traffic on every internet connection.
Speedify needs at least two internet connections. If a site has no cellular signal and no clear sky, there is nothing for Speedify to combine. Most sites can get two by using a Starlink dish and cellular together. The same setup is covered in using Starlink and 5G together for business.
Wi-Fi for the Whole Construction Trailer with a Powered by Speedify Router
To cover the whole trailer instead of one laptop, run Speedify on a Powered by Speedify router. The router uses all of the site’s internet connections together and gives the crew one Wi-Fi network, the same idea as turning a travel router into an internet gateway that uses several connections. Crews that move between sites can take the same setup with them, as in getting reliable internet while working from anywhere.
How to Set Up Speedify Internet for a Construction Trailer
- Install Speedify on the trailer laptop, or set up a Powered by Speedify router for the whole site.
- Connect the Starlink router and at least one cellular modem, ideally on two different carriers, to the trailer laptop or the Speedify router.
- Put the Starlink dish where it has the clearest view of the sky the site allows, and check the obstruction map in the Starlink app.
- Test it before the crew depends on it: during a test call, unplug one internet connection and check that the call stays up.
