Failover, Load Balancing, and Bonding Defined

  • Failover. A secondary connection sits idle until the primary fails, then traffic switches over, often with a noticeable gap while the switch happens.
  • Load balancing. Traffic gets distributed across multiple connections by rule, such as sending one type of traffic down one line and another down a second, but any single session still rides one path at a time.
  • Bonding. Every connection carries traffic from the same session simultaneously, combining their capacity and giving traffic somewhere else to go the instant one path degrades.

Failover wastes a paid-for connection until the moment disaster strikes, and load balancing routes traffic by static rules that don’t adapt to real-time conditions. How Speedify Bonds WANs at the Packet Level

Speedify breaks outbound traffic into packets and distributes them across every available WAN connection in proportion to how well each one is performing at that moment, then reassembles everything in correct order at the other end. When a connection’s performance drops, Speedify shifts more of the load to the healthier paths automatically and fails over in under a second if a connection disappears entirely. Every packet travels encrypted under a strict no-logs policy regardless of which physical WAN link carries it.

Business Scenarios for Each Approach, and Choosing Bonding vs Failover

Failover still makes sense for low-traffic backup lines where occasional downtime during a switch is acceptable and cost matters more than seamlessness. Load balancing suits static traffic splitting where different departments or applications are deliberately kept on separate lines.
