Check Whether Starlink or Snapchat Is Slowing Down Your Snaps
Open the Starlink app. If it shows your Starlink dish offline or obstructed, the problem is the Starlink dish or its view of the sky (check your Starlink status to see what it’s doing now). If the Starlink app shows Online, turn off Wi-Fi on your phone and send a Snap on cellular data. If it goes right away, the slowdown is on the Starlink side. If it’s slow on cellular too, close and reopen Snapchat and update it from the App Store or Google Play.
Why Snaps Take So Long to Send on Starlink, and What to Do About It
- Sending a Snap is an upload, and uploads are Starlink’s slow side. Starlink says uploads run 10 to 30 Mbps, against 45 to 280 Mbps for downloads. A long video Snap, or several Snaps at once, takes far longer to send than a photo. If a Snap fails, tap it to send it again once the Starlink internet connection is back.
- Your phone has a weak Wi-Fi signal. Starlink Wi-Fi weakens through walls and floors. If Snaps send quickly next to the Starlink router and crawl in another room, send from closer to the router.
- Clear what blocks your Starlink dish’s view of the sky. Even if nothing covers the Starlink dish itself, a tree or part of your roof off to the side can block the view as the satellites move overhead. The obstruction map in the Starlink app shows where.
- Your Starlink dish switches satellites about every 15 seconds. Each switch can cause a short drop, and a drop in the middle of sending leaves a Snap stuck on sending. No setting in Snapchat prevents it.
