Why Is Satellite Internet Slow? See How Speedify Speeds Up Starlink

Combine Starlink with Wi-Fi, 4G/5G Cellular or DSL in Speedify to Fix Slow Starlink Upload and Download Speeds

Starlink upload and download speeds are slower than you expect when something blocks your Starlink dish’s view of the sky, when your device has a weak Wi-Fi signal, when the Starlink network near you is busy, or when your Starlink dish switches satellites. Upload is usually the weak side: Starlink says downloads run 45 to 280 Mbps and uploads 10 to 30 Mbps, so video calls and uploads suffer first.

You can fix some of this yourself. For the rest, use Starlink together with a second internet connection, like another Starlink dish, 4G/5G cellular or a DSL line, and Speedify gets you faster uploads and downloads when Starlink dips.

Starlink Internet Connection Drops Happen to Everyone

Speedify measures thousands of Starlink users in more than 140 countries. In September 2026, fixed Starlink dishes went offline for about 38 minutes a day on average, and Starlink dishes on RVs and boats for about 46 minutes a day.

All Starlink dishes also see short dropouts roughly every 15 seconds as the Starlink internet connection switches from one moving satellite to the next. Even a perfectly installed Starlink dish goes offline, and about 7 in 10 Starlink users on Speedify use Starlink together with a second internet connection, like 4G/5G cellular.

Why Your Starlink Upload and Download Speeds Are Slow

Start with the Starlink app: if it shows your Starlink dish offline or obstructed, fix that first (check your Starlink status). Then run a speed test next to the Starlink router and again where you normally sit. If it’s much slower where you sit, the problem is how far your Wi-Fi reaches, not Starlink.

  • Clear what blocks your Starlink dish’s view of the sky. Even if nothing covers the Starlink dish itself, a tree or part of your roof off to the side can block the view as the satellites move overhead. The obstruction map in the Starlink app shows where.
  • Your computer, phone or TV has a weak Wi-Fi signal from the Starlink router. Move closer, or connect the computer or TV with an Ethernet cable if your Starlink router has an Ethernet port.
  • The Starlink network near you is busy. When many people nearby are online, Starlink slows some plans down first: Residential Lite is always slowed first, then Residential 100 Mbps, Residential 200 Mbps and Roam, then Residential Max, and Priority plans last.
  • Your Starlink dish switches satellites about every 15 seconds. Every Starlink dish gets short drops when it switches, and each drop slows your uploads and downloads for a moment.

Can Satellite Internet Handle Video Calls Without Freezing?

Starlink can. With satellite internet, your data travels up to a satellite and back down. Older satellite internet services use satellites much farther from Earth, which is why they are slow and laggy. Starlink satellites fly much closer, and Starlink says the delay is 25 to 60 milliseconds on land, short enough for video calls. The freezes you still see on a Starlink video call come from the short drops, not from the speed.

Get Faster Starlink Uploads and Downloads with a Second Internet Connection and Speedify

Use a second internet connection at the same time as Starlink: another Starlink dish, 4G/5G cellular or an old DSL line, whatever you have.

Speedify is the only app that combines all of your internet connections to keep you online when it matters most. Speedify sends your internet traffic over all of your internet connections at the same time, even a single upload or video call, so you get the upload and download speed of all of them combined. If Starlink drops, Speedify switches your traffic to the other internet connection automatically. Speedify’s Streaming mode puts calls and streams first. Speedify needs that second internet connection: with Starlink alone, it can’t add speed or stop the drops.

Download Speedify on your computer or phone, or on a router that works with Speedify to cover every device in the house. To add a phone’s cellular data to a computer, connect the phone with a USB cable, or use Speedify’s cellular sharing: put both on the same Wi-Fi, install Speedify on each, and pair them in the Speedify app.
