How to Fix Slow FaceTime on Starlink with Speedify for Faster Video Calls

FaceTime works on Starlink, and on Starlink Wi-Fi it uses your Starlink data, not your phone’s cellular data. FaceTime calls lag, freeze or drop when your Starlink internet connection has short drops: when something blocks your Starlink dish’s view of the sky, when your iPhone, iPad or Mac has a weak Wi-Fi signal, or when your Starlink dish switches satellites.

You can fix the first two yourself. For the satellite switches, use Starlink together with your iPhone’s 4G/5G cellular connection, and Speedify keeps FaceTime calls going when Starlink dips. The same setup keeps WhatsApp calls going on Starlink.

Starlink Internet Connection Dropouts Happen to Everyone

Speedify measures thousands of Starlink users in more than 150 countries. From 29 September to 12 October 2026, fixed Starlink dishes went offline for about 37 minutes a day on average, and Starlink dishes on RVs and boats for about 61 minutes a day.

Starlink also switches each dish to a new satellite every 15 seconds, and a switch can cause a short dropout. Even a perfectly installed Starlink dish goes offline, and about 7 in 10 Starlink users on Speedify use Starlink together with a second internet connection, like 4G/5G cellular.

Check Whether Starlink or Your Wi-Fi Is Freezing FaceTime

Open the Starlink app. If it shows your Starlink dish offline or obstructed, the problem is the Starlink dish or its view of the sky (check your Starlink status). If the Starlink app shows Online, turn off Wi-Fi on your iPhone and make a FaceTime call on cellular. A clear call on cellular means the problem is on the Starlink side: your Wi-Fi signal or the Starlink internet connection.

Fix FaceTime Lag on Starlink

  • Clear what blocks your Starlink dish’s view of the sky. Even if nothing covers the Starlink dish itself, a tree or part of your roof off to the side can block the view as the satellites move overhead. The obstruction map in the Starlink app shows where.
  • Take the call closer to the Starlink router. Walls and floors weaken Wi-Fi quickly. On a Mac, plug into the Starlink router with an Ethernet cable if your Starlink router has an Ethernet port (most Macs need a USB to Ethernet adapter).
  • Turn off your camera when the video keeps freezing. Tap the camera button during the call. FaceTime audio needs far less of your upload, and uploads are Starlink’s slow side.
  • Know which drops you can’t fix. Your Starlink dish switches satellites about every 15 seconds, and a drop in the middle of a FaceTime call freezes the video for a moment. No iPhone setting prevents it.

How to Stop FaceTime Using Cellular Data on Starlink

FaceTime doesn’t use cellular data while your iPhone is on Starlink Wi-Fi: it uses your Starlink data. FaceTime uses cellular data when your iPhone isn’t on Wi-Fi, and the iPhone’s Wi-Fi Assist setting can also switch to cellular when the Wi-Fi signal is weak. To stop FaceTime using cellular data at all, go to Settings, then Cellular (Mobile Data in some countries), and turn off FaceTime.

Keep FaceTime Calls Going on Starlink with iPhone Cellular and Speedify

The satellite switches are the part you can’t fix on Starlink alone. What fixes them is a second internet connection used at the same time: your iPhone’s 4G/5G cellular connection or a DSL line, whatever you have. A second Starlink dish switches satellites on the same 15-second schedule as the first, so it doesn’t cover these drops.

Speedify is an app that combines Starlink with your other internet connections, like 4G/5G cellular, into one connection. Speedify sends your FaceTime call over Starlink and cellular at the same time, and its Streaming mode puts calls first. If Starlink drops, Speedify switches your traffic to the other internet connection automatically and the call keeps going. Speedify needs that second internet connection: with Starlink alone, it can’t add speed or stop the drops.

Download Speedify on your iPhone, iPad or Mac. With Speedify, part of each call can go over cellular, so to save cellular data set cellular to Backup in the Speedify app: Speedify then uses it only when Starlink drops. An iPad or Mac with no cellular plan can use your iPhone’s cellular connection through Speedify’s cellular sharing: put them on the same Wi-Fi, install Speedify on both, and pair them in the Speedify app.
